Ferozepur: While the Indian government has introduced initiatives like the Child Online Protection in India Report to enhance online safety and digital literacy among children, and UNICEF is collaborating with social media platforms to combat cyberbullying, a crucial call for parental involvement has emerged from the grassroots from Shivani, Headmistress of a remote village Govt High School, Chak Ghubai in Mamdot Block of Ferozepur.

Shivani, emphasised the pivotal role parents and guardians play in regulating internet access for their children. She also urged families to establish clear guidelines for internet usage, highlighting the need to balance digital engagement with safety and responsible behaviour.

“Parents are the first line of defence in ensuring that children use the internet wisely,” Shivani remarked adding that by setting rules, we can shield them from risks such as cyber-bullying, online harassment, and even the detrimental health effects of excessive screen time.

She further suggested a government-led initiative to enforce regulated internet access during specific hours. For example, she proposed a policy restricting internet availability between 10 pm and 4 am, aiming to instil healthier digital habits, encourage physical activity, and mitigate mental health issues linked to excessive internet use.

Shivani lauded ongoing governmental and international efforts but stressed that these initiatives must be complemented by community and family-level engagement. “A collaborative approach between governments, schools, and parents is essential to fostering a safer and more productive online environment for our youth,” she added.

The growing digital era offers immense opportunities but demands accountability from every stakeholder. As discussions around internet safety expand, Shivani’s advocacy serves as a reminder of families' indispensable role in shaping children's digital futures.
