DC Reviews Food Safety Standards Compliance during the festive season

SAS Nagar: In a bid to keep a check on food adulteration and ensure compliance with the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India’s specifications in manufacturing/Bakery goods during the festive season, the Deputy Commissioner Mrs Aashika Jain reviewed the progress of the Food Safety wing today at her office.


Directing the Civil Surgeon Dr Renu Singh and District Health Officer Dr Amrit Warring, Deputy Commissioner Jain asked them to ensure the purity of sweets/bakery items in the market by keeping check on any type of adulteration or spurious or synthetic products.


Civil Surgeon and District Health Officer while apprising the Deputy Commissioner of the ongoing campaign against the recent past against food adulteration said that the Health Department and Officers of the Food and Drug Administration have already been working in the field to keep a strict check on adulteration during the festive season.


The Deputy Commissioner asked them to ensure the quality of the sweets and bakery items as per the specifications and conditions laid by the Food Safety and Standards Act such as manufacturing date, expiry date, ingredients etc.


She said that the use of food colours and silver foils should be checked carefully so that artificial colours or synthetic items would not be used in food items. Appealing to the sweetmeat manufacturers and bakers, the Deputy Commissioner said that there should be no compromise on the quality of eatables and the packing should contain all the requisite information so that these packages should not bear any misleading or misbranding information.


She said that as per the Food Safety Standards Authority of India rules, the manufacturer should ensure proper cleanliness at workshops/kitchens and hygiene of workers preparing the eatables.


She also appealed to the people to check all the details about the product on the package box before purchasing it to ensure a safe and healthy festivity. Assuring the Deputy Commissioner of the compliance of Food Safety and Standards Act, DHO Dr Warring said that nobody would be allowed to put human beings at risk with food adulteration.


Meanwhile, a food safety team led by District Health Officer, Dr Amrit Warring conducted checking at workshops/kitchens of several sweet meat manufacturers to check the hygiene and cleanliness besides cautioning them of spurious/synthetic Khoya and Paneer. He said that the drive is aimed at creating awareness among the people of the purity of eatables and keeping a check on the manufacturing to meet all the specifications laid by FSSAI.
