'World Standards Day' celebrated

CHANDIGARH: 'World Standards Day' is celebrated all over the world on 14th October every year with a unique theme. This year World Standards Day, was celebrated by the Bureau of Indian Standards, Northern Regional Office, Chandigarh on Monday 14 October, 2024 at J.W. Marriott Sector-35, Chandigarh, with this year's theme on "SDG 9: Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure." Sh. Tejveer Singh (IAS) Additional Chief Secretary, Industry & Commerce , Government of Punjab, was the Chief Guest of the function.

 

Welcoming the guests, Smt. Sneh Lata Scientist- G & DDG Northern Regional Office, BIS informed that the aim of World Standards Day is to raise awareness among regulators, Industry, Consumers & Society regarding the importance of standardisation to the national & global economy.

 

She further added that this day is specially chosen to pay tributes and gratitude to honour the efforts of thousands of experts globally who contribute to develop the standards. She also informed about standardisation work carried out by BIS in various fields such as infrastructure development, civil engineering, innovation and artificial intelligence which directly impact the quality of life of common man as well as various certification schemes being operated by the Bureau. 

She emphasised that the growth in the number of licences in various sectors under different schemes is in itself an indicator of the confidence of the industry, consumers and public at large. She further elaborated upon the benefits of harmonisation with International Standards in achieving 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

 

In his inaugural address, the Sh. Tejveer Singh (IAS) Additional Chief Secretary, Industry & Commerce ,Government of Punjab expressed his views on the theme of this year's World Standards Day, "SDG 9: Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure." He also stressed that Sustainable Development is the key to the progress of Society and economic development of the Country without compromising the quality of the environment for future generations. He appreciated the efforts of BIS for services to Industry as well as Consumers.

 

Message on World Standards Day was delivered by Sh. S S Meena Scientist – F, HMO(N), BIS. He emphasised the importance of standards in achieving global goals and building a resilient future. Speaking on the occasion, he added that in this celebration through awareness programs, workshops, and community outreach activities to highlight the significance of standards in daily life and industry.

 

Prof Deepak Khare, BIS Standardization Chair, Dept. Of Water Resources Development and Management,Dean, Finance and Administration,IIT, Roorkee delivered the Technical Session on Role of Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) in Achieving SDGs: Challenges & Opportunities for Industry, innovation, and infrastructure in the age of AI.

Sh. Pritpal Singh Executive Director, Department of Science and Technology, delivered the Technical Session How AI can help in fostering innovation in the industrial sector and attaining sustainability. Various stakeholders of the BIS were awarded during the function. The Programme was attended by Industry, BIS Licensees, Consumer Organization etc. The Programme ended with a hearty vote of thanks.
